English man with a new Vespa Sprint 50 2T in Munich!

#1 Beitrag von Chris_J » So 17. Apr 2016, 10:52

Hey guys! Firstly, I hope the you do not mind me posting in English?

So, just as I approach 30 years old, I finally decided to step over from cars to these two-wheeled wonders. I'm living in Munich and recently purchased a second hand Vespa Sprint 50 2T in Matt Grey. Despite my reservations about the very small engine, I find her an absolute wonder to zip around the city.

Myself and the missus have started doing short trips into the more rural areas on the faster roads in order to get more familiar with using a bike. However, this is where, of course, you start to notice that little engine working quite hard, especially with two people on the bike.

My idea is to remove the vario ring to gain a small amount of top end speed and also install some lighter rollers to also increase acceleration capabilities and maybe hill work. I did not want to start cutting and modifying the exhaust system or installer larger jets in the carburettor. Do you think this would bring a small noticeable improvement? If so, could somebody kindly recommend which weight of rollers I should use in this 2T engine?

Thanks in advance!

Hello Chris and welcome at the German vespa community!

I hope you don't mind my bad english. I think, that the weight of your rollers should be the same as the ones in the primavera. So Wikipedia says that 19x15,5 7,5 g are actually installed. Some users (myself included) use Dr. Pulleys rollers in their variators. By installing the rollers at a weight of 7g, you will earn a little bit of agility (which is good for two person driving) and a little amount of top speed. Of course you can install the same weight in pulleys, and the speed will gain a little more, but Munich isn't flat so you have to choose the middle way.

Let's have a look what other users (and 2t drivers) have to say!

I wish you a lot if fun with your :vespa:

Greetings
Markus

Thank you for the warm greetings! :prost: ....and please, do not worry about your English. I just fully appreciate that people are willing to speak to me in English :)

Thanks for the tip regarding the Dr. Pulley sliders. I have read about these and the look very interesting, but I understand that the calculation for the reduced weight is not the same as normal rollers, so I will wait to hear from you experts first.

ElSalsero, this is also a great idea actually and I have already suggested this to the missus haha!!

Hi Chris,

welcome to the best scooterforum ever! :D

Congratulations for choosing this nice Vespa Sprint! You will love it. For me riding my Vespas is the only acceptabel way to get through the crowded Traffic in Munich and - of course - the most delightful one. :D :vespa:

Greetings, Mikel

Hallo Chris,

welcome to this Forum.
If you will optimize the vario to your requirements, first you should check which weight the originally installed Rollers have. I found two different specifications, 7.5gr in Wikipedia and 6.3gr in the easyparts partlist. The dr.Pulley sliders should have about 10 to 15 percent less then the originals. So depending on the original wheigt of the rollers, i would suggest to try 6.5gr (if original 7.5) or 5.5gr (if original 6.3).
In both cases, size is 19x15.5.

Ah, fair enough! Looks like someone is copying your style ;)

Would have been great to have a flying and vespa buddy in Munich :bier:

So, I took out my Sprint today on my own for the first time since I bought it. Had a nice open stretch of road in front of me so decided to see what she can do full power.

To my surprise, it reached a steady 52km/h. Just to be sure that the road was flat, I did a u-turn and went back down the road in the opposite direction. Again 52km/h.

Could mine have already had the vario ring removed or is that probably errors in the speedometer?

Hey Chris,

don't worry: 52 km/h on your Vespa-speedometer are about "real" 45 - 47 km/h. ;)
